FALLS CHURCH, Va., June 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Department of Defense's Defense Security Service (DSS) has presented its 2014 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Awards to Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) facilities in Middletown, Rhode Island; McClellan Park, California; and Charlottesville.
The three Northrop Grumman honorees are among 40 facilities selected to receive the prestigious Cogswell Award from a field of 13,300 defense contractors eligible for recognition.
Selection criteria for the annual award include establishing and sustaining a security program that far exceeds industry standards and providing leadership to other cleared facilities in establishing best practices to maintain the highest security standards. Facilities are nominated by a DSS industrial security representative and are required to have achieved two consecutive "superior" DSS ratings. Following a vigorous vetting process, a national review team ranks and selects the awardees.
Northrop Grumman'sMcClelland Park site, located northeast of Sacramento, California, develops strategic signal processing systems, performs related studies and analyses, and supplies tactical reconnaissance and direction-finding systems to the U.S. military and foreign governments.
At its Middletown facility, Northrop Grumman develops, operates and maintains maritime training systems, including high-fidelity, PC-based simulation systems and combat system team trainers for U.S. Navy submarines and surface warfare.
The Charlottesville facility provides navigation and data distribution solutions for the commercial and defense maritime industry, including radars, gyrocompass systems, steering systems as well as integrated bridge and control systems.
The Cogswell Award, established in 1966, is named in honor of the late U.S. Air Force Col. James S. Cogswell, the first chief of industrial security within the U.S. Department of Defense. Cogswell was responsible for developing the basic principles of the Industrial Security Program, which includes an emphasis on the partnership between industry and government to protect classified information.
The awards were presented at the 50th annual National Classification Management Society training seminar June 17 at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland.
